"Thy breath is like the steam of apple-pyes." - Robert Greene, "Arcadia", 1590
The first work in the Getting to Know You Series, Apple Pie Saturdays 2004 is a participatory exploration of conversation, the public, the private, and questions the role of art in my life and the impact it may have on others.
Every Saturday for the year of 2004 I am making myself available to come to your home and bake an apple pie. I will bring all the ingredients and supplies, do all the preparation, the baking, and the cleaning. In exchange for the pie I ask that you allow me to document the interchange. In addition to the homemade apple pie you can receive a handmade, limited editon, commerative plate by giving me the plate that I eat the slice of pie off of.
Estimated duration: 3 hours
Email, write, or call to reserve your Saturday and schedule a time for this fun-filled event.

Some questions: What happens when art leaves it's conventional spaces and walks into our homes? What is your role when you are asked to become active? Does hanging out in the kitchen and cooking break down barriers? open up communication? Is apple pie really american? can food be nationalistic? patriotic? what are the feminist implications of this piece? is it easier to learn more about someone in their home? does the participant's home become a gallery? museum? because of the performance? is this a performance when i am searching for a genuine experience? can it be a "real" experience when i say it is art? is everyone performing? for the camera? for the tape recorder?
